Using the Environmental Benefit Calculator

Tanks and rain-gardens benefit Little Stringybark Creek by keeping damaging stormwater out of the creek when it rains and allowing cleaner, filtered water to flow to the creek (click here for more information). Proposed works in the creek's catchment are typically assessed for the benefit they provide to the creek. This aids in the design of works (such as the required size of the rain-garden) and provides us with a cost/benefit analysis (does the works represent "value for money").

Environmental Benefit and Stormwater Tender

Stormwater Tender allows each property owner to name the minimum price they would want to receive to purchase or install new rainwater tanks and raingardens, or to retrofit existing tanks.

If the land owner's Tender is successful (it offers 'value for money'), they will be paid according to the the set price per unit of environmental benefit they are providing (even if that price is more than what they requested).

Using the Calculator

Warning: please wait for the loading wheel (top left hand corner of screen) to disappear before clicking anything. The calculator takes at least 10-15 seconds to load fully.

Start on the property tab. This calculates the highest Environmental Benefit (EB) score your property could possibly earn.

From there you can go to the tank page, or the rain-garden page to see how much of your potential EB score you can earn with your planned projects.

If you hover your mouse over the 'tip' boxes, hints on using the calculator will appear.

The Environmental Benefit Calculator

The Environmental Benefit (EB) calculator lets you try different tank and rain-garden installation ideas to see which ones earn the best EB scores.

It also produces graphs that show differences in water yield between wet, dry and average years to give you an indication of water savings that might be achieved in drier areas, or in a drier future...

You can also find further tips on getting the best possible EB score for your property on the hints and tips page or the technical details page.

If you take part in Stormwater Tender, you will bid for money for your tanks and/or rain-gardens. You are more likely to be successful if your system scores the best environmental benefit for the least cost. In using the calculator, you should talk to plumbers or landscapers to find out what is feasible and most appropriate for your property, and at what cost. (See our suppliers list ).
